Shellie's Introduction of Carl - April 25
Carl was found as a stray and incarcerated, Carl found himself in serious trouble. You see, he had a 'bad' eye. The shelter vet didn't know what was wrong, but the drops he'd been giving him for two weeks weren't working. The eye was reported to be 'solid black' and 'oozing pus' - YUCK!!! I didn't have an opportunity to see him firsthand myself being 600 miles away, but the Shelter Director told me that several other rescue groups were coming in to meet and evaluate him. Unfortunately, none of them took him in. She was told by one evaluator that they thought Carl was only "80% Samoyed - pure except for the eyes..." That did it for me - we committed to the dog and flew on the wings of hope that if anything seriously was wrong, maybe SamUrgency would be there to help Carl on his road to recovery! We committed to him with the knowledge that he was to be euthanized if we did not take him.
Carl was pulled from the shelter and altered per California law before he was released to us. We had him boarded for two days until we could get to him and bring him home. Within hours of arriving home, he got the diagnosis from our vet that the eye was indeed blind and should be removed for several reasons. He believed the condition to be that of 'Dry Eye' and it would need continual drops to not be irritated. These drops weren't helping much, and it was ticking Carl off having his irritated eye handled so much - he'd rather be playing with the other dogs than having to get medicine! We didn't want to create another 'head shy' situation like we had with poor Judge. Having the eye removed will also increase his adoptability as the new owners won't have to commit to doing drops several times a day. So, the decision was made - as was the appointment and the SamUrgency application!
Carl had his surgery on 4/24/02 and is doing great the morning after. He's always a very happy boy and will be a true gem once he's all healed over. Now, all he needs is time... and a great Forever Home!
