April 2006 -
Delilah was picked up by a Texas shelter along with her four 10-week-old puppies after tunneling into the neighbor's yard. She already had kennel cough and the pups came down with it as well while at the shelter. North Texas Samoyed Rescue quickly picked them up at the shelter because if the illness had been allowed to develop, they would have been euthanized for being sick.
Delilah was spayed on Thursday, April 20th. Late in the day, NTSR received a call from the vet indicating that Delilah wasn't doing well and since the vet office would close for the evening they requested someone pick up Delilah so she could be monitored overnight. By the time she arrived at her foster home she was bleeding profusely and the decision was made to rush her to the Emergency Animal Clinic where they proceeded to do a blood transfusion and treat her for internal bleeding. Delilah received additional units of blood and was stabilized overnight before being released back into the care of the surgical vet the next day. She is now producing her own new blood cells, but has a continued road to recovery after the trauma of whelping a large litter of puppies and her surgical emergency. She has been ordered complete rest for two weeks along with a course of antibiotics and pain medications. Fortunately, Delilah is up to date on her shots and is heartworm-free. Colleen reports that she is fully housetrained and is the sweetest thing anyone could ask for, so we hope she'll find the perfect forever home as soon as she's recovered.
Unfortunately, the money used to pay for this expensive emergency was going to be used to fund the spay/neuter and puppy shots for the six puppies taken in to NTSR in the last month. Any donation will help offset NTSR's very costly spring of 2006. We appreciate your help, large or small.
I wanted to let everyone know that Delilah was given a clean bill of health this morning at about 9:30 am. All of her staples were removed. She had been doing remarkably better, wanting to bounce around and play. Her appetite returned after finishing her antibiotics. As a matter of fact, she had gained a pound from her pre-surgery weight. She is now at 52 lbs. She was 46 lbs. when she came into rescue. As soon as her new family found out, they were on the way to get her. A friend had done the home check for me last weekend. Her new family has had several Sams in their life so they are broken in. They had lost their last one last year and were desperately wanting another one. They have a 6-year-old female Dalmatian that they had rescued from a shelter and even put through heartworm treatment when they got her out of the shelter. So today, at about 2:30, Delilah went to her new home. She and the Dalmatian were immediate friends.
The family would also like the little girl puppy but they aren't ready to leave as of yet. I had to take Brutus, the big boy, to the vet today along with Mom because he had a gunky eye. It was a clogged tear duct, which they say is common after a virus, such as the kennel cough they had. Unfortunately, he wouldn't be still so they had to sedate him to unclog it. Of course, it doubled the price but he should be getting better now. When we got Brutus, he weighed 16.7 lbs. Today, 5 1/2 weeks later, he weighed 32 lbs.
I want to thank each and everyone that has supported Delilah. I hope you see how this little girl is doing now.
Delilah is now named Leia and lives in Sugarland, Texas along with a rescue that the family adopted from us 3 weeks later. If it hadn't been for SamUrgency and other friends of NTSR, we wouldn't have been able to help the dogs that have come afterwards. In less than 3 months, we took in 15 dogs.
