SamUrgency's newest dog in need is Jazz. She is 8 - 9 years old and was abandoned by her owner when they moved. Poor Jazz hasn't led an easy life so far. She was chained outdoors and basically neglected. Her coat was such a matted mess that she had to be shaved. And that's when it was discovered that Jazz had mammary tumors. When she was examined by a veterinarian it was determined that she had two mammary tumors, is stage 2 heartworm positive, has ear infections in both ears and has flea allergies. The good news is, she has a good chance of recovery if the tumors are removed before the cancer spreads. The vet will remove the tumors first, then later treat for heartworms.
Currently Jazz is with a wonderful foster mom, Robin. Robin reports that she is a sweet girl. We think she is adorable.
The quoted cost for Jazz's treatment is between $950 and $1100. Tarheel rescue is planning a fund raiser, but your generous donations would go a long way in helping us help her. Keep watching the SamUrgency website for further updates from Tarheel Rescue and Robin as Jazz begins her journey back to good health.
Thank you for your continued support of SamUrgency!
Jazz came into rescue when her owner moved and abandoned her, leaving her to survive on her own. A neighbor discovered the situation and rounded up some friends to help assist her. Jazz was matted to the skin from years of being chained outside, so the first order of business was to have her shaved down and to treat the various skin problems that were caused by neglect. She was updated on her shots and was examined by the vet, who discovered that she was heartworm positive, had two mammary tumors, a flea allergy, broken lower canine teeth, and a terrible infection in both ears. They began treating the ear infection and flea allergy, but realized the other health problems were serious and needed medical intervention. Tarheel Samoyed Club Rescue was contacted at this point.
A biopsy of the tumors revealed that they were cancerous and needed immediate removal. An ultrasound shows that the cancer has not spread to any other parts of Jazz's body, so the prognosis is good if a mastectomy is performed immediately before the cancer has a chance to spread. The vet feels that it is important to remove the tumors first, before beginning the heartworm treatment, as the tumors could prove life threatening if left for a few more months while the heartworm treatment is being implemented. Once the surgery is over and the incisions healed, heartworm treatment will begin.
On a personal note, Jazz is a delightful Sammy girl who has won the hearts of all in her community who have met her. Her foster "Mom" Robin works in a hospital and Jazz has been adopted by Robin's co-workers as their special mascot. Animal control could have easily been called to pick up this girl after she was abandoned by her owner, but instead, the good Samaritans in the Corrnelius area are really rallying to save her. Together, with Tarheel Samoyed Club Rescue, they are trying to give this girl the new life that she deserves! We hope that you will contribute towards this rescue effort, as Jazz's medical expenses are many, due to years of neglect.
