Success Stories: Kody

Kody was picked up as a stray, seen living in a turned over trash can. He is dangerously underweight (weighs 30 pounds) and was covered in mats, ticks and fleas. This dog also has whip worms and heartworms. This dog probably would not have survived if he had not been turned over to rescue, due to his extremely poor physical condition. This dog has a very loving and friendly personality and gets along well with people, including young children, as well as other dogs and cats.

There were probably 40-50 engorged ticks pulled off of this dog when we got him, including four imbedded in one ear.

Update from From Carol, July 3, 2006:

Hi Everyone!

Kody is doing great in foster care at Nancy's house! His weight is now 43 pounds, for a whopping 13 pound weight gain since he was picked up as a stray by Animal Control! He is now free of hookworms, whip worms, ticks, fleas and mats, and the vet has given the green light to begin his heartworm treatment next Monday, July 10th!!Ê

The best news is...a family who has adopted two rescue dogs from us in the past drove three hours (each way) to visit Kody this past weekend...and Kody now has his own Forever Home waiting for him when he completes his heartworm treatment and is neutered! Whoopee!! I am so thrilled for this boy...you couldn't ask for a sweeter, friendlier, more deserving dog! To know Kody now has such a wonderful, caring family waiting for him...a home to call his own, after all that he has been through...is awesome!! :-))

I've attached some recent photos of Kody for you to see, and have included some first shots of Kody with his very own future family!Ê

I hope you all have a great Fourth of July!!

From Carol, July 11, 2006:

Hi Everyone!

This has been an interesting heartworm treatment to observe, as Kody was pre-treated with doxycycline by this vet to weaken the heartworms prior to beginning the injections. Kody had his first injectable heartworm treatment yesterday and his second treatment today. Nancy picked him up after work this afternoon, and he is now resting comfortably in his crate at her house. Here is Nancy's Vet report (photo attached):

"Kody weighed 47 pounds when he checked in for his treatment. His written instructions say he has to be quiet and confined for 6 weeks. I am supposed to watch for difficulty breathing or depression. On 7/17/06 he is supposed to get his heart guard dose. They have included a 6 month supply for him. His return date if all goes well is 8/10/06. I will be out of town that week so will need to push it back until the 14 th. Then he will need a re-check test on 11/10/06. Dr Whitted did the treatment and she said she would like Kody to gain another 10 pounds and wait 8 weeks for the neutering. That would put him at 57 pounds.

"Sammi was so glad to see him and Jan took her home for a while so Kody could settle in. He is not pleased with the confinement, but would not settle down on the rug. I gave him the second dose of Metacam 10ml for pain management They said one dose a day. Sammi Sue and I will do our best to keep him happy and eating to gain that weight.

"Thanks to everyone at Sam Urgency who donated the funds to provide this boy with the heartworm treatment he needed! Because of Sam Urgency, he will now have a second chance at life...and that's a good thing!! :-))

"Kody sends lots of wags and doggie kisses to his friends at Sam Urgency!!"
