Success Stories: Maverick

Maverick was an unclaimed stray at the shelter in Macon/Perry, Georgia. He is heartworm positive and will need treatment and the mandatory 4 week recovery period on very limited activity.

Maverick's foster mom, Alice Barz says that he has loads of personality - he howls and talks and communicates what he wants very well. He is good with other dogs and very sweet to people. When he came into rescue he had the worst flea infestation that Alice had ever seen. She can't help but think that maybe when his former owners found out that Maverick was heartworm positive, they abandoned him. This beautiful boy will be in his current foster home until he is ready to begin his quest for that perfect forever home. A sponsor has offered to pay Maverick's vet expenses.

Alice's Maverick Update - March 15

Maverick came back from the vet yesterday afternoon. The vet commented that he is "quite vocal" and he wondered if thats why he was abandoned, Mr. Man said the same thing about how noisy Mav is. Most of his distress is over being crated, leashed and tied out to poop instead of being held in somebody's lap. Poor baby! He is demanding but precious! He barked a long time lastnight but has been silent most of this morning. I rotate his potty breaks with Duke who is a week ahead of him on the HW treatment. Duke is very different. He has been a saint through this whole thing and very loving. As soon as Maverick gets used to the situation I feel like he will begin to accept the way things must be also. In the meantime, he is finding it distressing. The vet reassured me that he will not get a blood clot just from barking in his crate.

Alice's Maverick Update - April 1

Mav did well over the weekend. It is getting harder and harder for him to stay in his crate as he is feeling better each day! He is still on meds, his appetite has picked up dramatically and he loves visitors, of which he has had several! Two nights in a row he woke me up at 4 AM to go out, barking and carrying on: there is no question there! This morning I got to sleep in but as soon as I got downstairs he did begin on me until he got his breakfast! (They all do that!) He has a delightfully goofy look on his face at all times and assumes I am, or should be at his beck and call. He is so precious!

Alice's Maverick Update - April 3

I just placed Maverick with a retired nurse who has 2 13-year old sammies and is home most of the time except two mornings when she volunteers at her church. He got in the van and went happily. She said she wants him because he needs her. There were others that wanted him badly but I wanted someone who could stay home with him most of the time. I will miss his incredible sweetness.

Ludell's Maverick Update - April 4

Our first 24 hours with Maverick have gone quite well!! He has eaten well both yesterday and today! Takes his meds like a champ. He spent this morning in a crate right next to where my 2 sammys hang out when waiting for me to come home. All three were happy to see me!!! My male Max had to let Mav know that he(Max) was alpha male( just a little growl) but otherwise all is well. All three slept in the bedroom with me last night! My female Misty sometimes gets up on the bed but she is the only one that has tried it. I'm still hoping to get Maverick groomed tomorrow. He is a sweetie

Ludell's Maverick Update - April 6

Well we had a fun Friday. The groomer was not able to untangle the mats on poor Maverick, so he was shaved (not close just mat deep). He looks funny but his skin seems to be in good condition, and now he can grow a new coat without the mats!! He is enjoying being with me and his brother and sister. They weren't sure just who he was when I brought him home from the groomers. He is eating well and only 2 more days of antobiotics!!!! Thanks again for rescuing him

Ludell's Maverick Update - July 23

Maverick is doing great! He has brought new life into my house of aging ones (me included) He seems to have always belonged here. I am curious sometimes as to why such a loving sweet guy wound up on the streets. He enjoys the fenced backyard and barking at the dogs next door (who are "outside" dogs) I think he may be bragging about how good he has it living in an air conditioned house with us old codgers. He really enjoys watching animal planet on TV (from my bed) and has tried several times to get into the TV whenever there is a German Shepherd on. He managed once to slip out the front door and chased my outside cat up a tree but I'm a lot more careful now. I don't open the front door until he is secured in a bedroom or the garage!! Now he just watches the cats through the window. His fur is growing out nicely and he enjoys his monthly groomings.
