Pacer
9/10/2004:
Pacer was found on a road in Nevada by a stranger who let him into his truck. The good Samaritan noticed this dog had a thick chain embedded in the skin of his neck, so he took Pacer to a vet who then contacted the local rescue organization to help find a new home for this nice boy. The embedded chain was surgically removed from Pacer's neck, and he is now recovering from the injury. It appears that Pacer was physically abused by his previous owner, so healing his emotional scars may take a little longer than his physical injuries.

Update, 4/21/06
I would like to happily announce that Pacer (maybe Shepherd, maybe Husky), who came into my care after being found on the side of a country road with a chain embedded in his neck, and who was rehabilitated by me, has now been adopted!
He is almost home... the Chicago area.
I am writing anyone who ever helped me the past 2 years, even if the help was just offering me support by email.
Below is a picture of him under my kitchen table, as I chatted with his new family.
I am so proud of Pacer for just about turning into a 'regular dog' (he still is quite shy.) Kinda makes me think of the velveteen rabbit -- when he became 'real'.
